Unique Actors Won't Find Many Acting Roles

by Ashlley Elias

Actors might find no casting calls include roles they would fit. Some roles an actor might think they are perfect for, but a producer disagrees. There are a limited number of roles in the acting game and if you aren't part of a large group you will find roles for you even scarcer. The problem isn't with you as an actor, but rather the status quo. This is especially true in the movie business.

Stereotypes

Films need to communicate quickly and simply. Movies aren't good with nuance and subtlety. You only have two hours to get this story told and can't sacrifice too much for explaining complex characters. So they find actors that match types. If he looks heroic he'll play the hero. If she looks pretty but innocent she'll be the love interest. There is an alternate universe in film where people look like how they are on the inside. It's not accurate or true to life but it's easy to do. This is also why minorities get the same roles they always have, because it takes less explaining.

Writers Ignorance

Most writers are of a certain type. There are tendencies that writers tend to share: white and male and of means. So well-to-do white men are writing a lot of these scripts. Even if you are a white male with money that does have a broad life experience, don't get the idea that you represent most of them. With limited life experience will come limited or slanted story ideas. Maybe they've never seen a black CEO and that's why they don't write about a story with one in it. They've only even come in contact with Latinos in the context of crime or residential maintenance, so that's why they can't see them as "normal" people.

Audience Receptivity

Some audience members have even more limited experience than writers. They might not have have ever come in contact with someone of a different culture. Their only exposure to an Asian person might have been from media alone and won't be able to comprehend a Chinese girl as a love interest. It may not make sense to have a Korean guy who can kick ass because the only ones they've seen are good at math.

Innovation Aversion

In general movie makers want just enough new to not seem a complete copy but not so much that it's unfamiliar. They want the old with a twist and this does give a lot of space for new acting talent to appear. So not only will they probably want to work with the established actors in a different character, the characters and situations won't be too drastically different from what they've been doing previously. Even if there is change in regard to opportunities for different looking actors, it will be a slow process.

People are to blame for why movies are made like they are, but you are to blame if you let that stop you from becoming an actor. Just because most people can't handle someone like you in a certain role doesn't mean there isn't an audience for it out there. It just means you are going to have to work more like a producer-actor. You can't wait for roles because they probably won't come and if they do, they won't be plentiful. You don't have to make movies for Middle America, make them for people who know people like you. Go forth and make history.
