Memorize Acting Scenes While At Work
For some actors remembering lines is no problem but for others it is the one thing they hate. Marlon Brando and John Favreau are two actors that purportedly are not gifted in the memorization area. Add that to the fact that many of us have to hold down full-time jobs, it can be difficult to even find the time to work on lines. With a little ingenuity you can squeeze in a little acting prep time on the job.
Break Times
Obviously when you are off work you should be working on your own stuff. Too often co-workers steal your breaks from you by wanting to get coffee with them on 15 minute breaks and going out to lunch for your 30 minute break. Snatch your time back from these people or else you will be wondering why there are never enough hours in the day.
Emails
Reading and writing lines are effective ways of memorizing. Many of us work in offices or other places where we are expected to communicate through email. Typing one email looks no different than typing any other so if you were to type yourself a few emails that happen to consist of the text of your lines nobody would be the wiser. Add that to the reading of the email you send to yourself and you just did some acting work while looking like you were doing work work.
Voicemail
Sometimes we just need to hear the lines and say the lines to be able to memorize them. At many jobs you have a work phone or a cell phone you can use. Instead of talking to a customer or co-worker you can just call your voicemail and leave a message with a practice run of your lines. If you still aren't sure what the lines are then listen to that voicemail you left where you read the lines verbatim. As far as your boss knows you were making work-related calls all day.
Bathroom Time
Trust me that no matter how many times you go to the bathroom and no matter how long you stay there, most bosses will never call you on it. So the bathroom stall is a home away from home. You bring in your lines and rehearse them quietly in your head or say them outloud when you are sure nobody is in the bathroom with you. You can rewrite lines and you can make phone calls to your voicemail with practice runs.
This is stealing, you might be thinking. Think about the moms and dads that talk to their children all day on company time. There are more important things than complete work efficiency at all times. I do not mean that you should not do your job, but there is a lot of wiggle room in the day that you can shuffle to your side with a little craftiness.
