Why Actors Shouldn't Only Audition Pt2

by Ashlley Elias

Most actors think success will be achieved by going through the gauntlet of auditions to finally find that one person who can put them in some big production. While there are stories bandied about retelling the overnight success of this or that actor or the newest hot actress that was discovered, most of these are fabrications.

Acting success doesn't come only from auditioning over and over till it works. Some may find success with the rhinoceros approach of constantly auditioning but it's not the best way.

Rejection Saps Enthusiasm

Getting told "no" repeatedly will have an impact on your psyche. No matter how stoic actors try to think they are, everybody has a breaking point. Even if you never reach the end of your rope, it can't help but affect your life in little ways. Soon the odds seem stacked against you so you don't take acting classes as serious anymore. When things aren't going your way consistently you may not come across as the actor you really are and that could affect opportunities.

Time Better Spent Other Ways

I'm not convinced that just any acting job is a good acting job. If you want to build a career it will be with the help of certain people, working with just anyone who will give you a role may not be the way to go. Instead of just showing up at every audition, be more selective and use it not only to audition but also meet people you want to work with. Instead of just waiting around for your turn to dance for the casting director, maybe you should take the time to learn more about the industry. You might find you have other capacities beyond acting that can help you make opportunities, like writing or producing.

False Expectations

By going on these auditions all the time you get into a groove where it's almost like your job is to audition. Aside from getting comfortable with the whole ritual, it also gives you the wrong impression about the business. Most acting jobs are gotten from past work and not from cold readings. It's rare that you will land something without a relationship. Instead of just working on casting calls, put some time into making genuine friendships with people you can help. Instead of begging for a job find out what other problems of theirs you can solve to get your face on their radar.

They Only Want Stereotypes

Most shows want you to be what you look like. This may sound self-evident but we all know we are more than what we look like. The guy with chiseled features is not always heroic in life, the most beautiful girl does not always get the guy. For the people that are ok with this limited acting experience this process isn't a problem, clearly. For people for with higher aspirations or an unorthodox look, it will be a source of great consternation.

Don't just rely on the auditioning process for you to reach the success with acting that you desire. Put some time into other areas that can also bear fruit. Make friends and learn about the business and you will be steps closer to reaching your goals.
