Why Actors Shouldn't Only Audition Pt1

Instead of quitting, do more instead of less. Do the hard work of making a project that is tailor-made for you. It might not be what you thought of when you first conceived of being an actor, but it is something you can do. You may doubt your abilities to make your own opportunities, but some aspects of it work in your favor.
You Direct Yourself In Class
In acting class you are given freedom to do whatever you want with a performance. In essence you direct yourself in the scenes, even if you don't do it consciously. So you already have some experience doing one of the main functions of any production. You just might need to get a little better at it, that's all. Up to this time you haven't given it much conscious thought and haven't directed other actors, but with a little extra effort you can handle these functions, too.
Learn To Write While Waiting For A Break
Many actors go long periods without landing a role of any kind. This is the kind of downtime that could be used to learn something about writing. Writing can only help put you in a position to create your own thing to be in, not hurt you. Writing isn't a simple process to master, but with consistent attention to it over the years you are waiting for a break you might be able to wield the pen mightily.
Any Money Made, You Get More
When you start pushing, life starts pulling. Once you get a project going that you write and direct, it just might gain some attention and even profit. This isn't a likely occurrence by any stretch, but if it did happen you would be in a position to get a lot more out of it than you would as just an actor. The time you put in to making the project will pay off not only in a quality role, but also give you a financial cushion to take on your next endeavor.
Even A Failure Will Prove Your Mettle
Putting together a movie, episodic web series, or stage play is not simple. There are many factors outside of your control since you can't do it all yourself. Through no fault of your own all your efforts could go down in flames no matter how hard your try. It might seem like a great way to waste your time, but it is indeed still a worthwhile effort. Everybody that produces projects understands that failure happens to the best of us and will respect you all the more for it. You shepherding a project that fails will prove to people that you are serious about acting like nothing else could.
It might seem auditioning is the only way to get acting work, but really it's just the easiest way. You show up when they tell you to, dance when they say dance. You cry when they say to, then move on to the next audition. It does take more of you to make your own projects, but you already have some advantages in your corner so use them while you're waiting to hear from that producer instead of using it to whine to your friends about your bad luck.
