Actors Should Learn More Than Just Acting
If you want to make it as an actor, you might consider learning more about the business than just acting. Screen acting is where most of the opportunity is, so it will help you to learn as much about it as you can stand. A film isn't just you showing up and doing your part. There are many things that need to come together to get a movie made.
Instead of waiting for a movie you can be in, learn how to help make one and you might be the tipping point to get something off the ground. Aside from just getting in a movie or some kind of screen production, there are other advantages to learning more crafts than just acting.
Other Hidden Talents
Once you delve into the other crafts involved in making films, you might find some of it appeals to you. You may like the business of producing a picture or you might like the idea of writing the words actors say. That's not to say that it will be easy. It will take time to know if you like something and even more time to get good. Take some time to get acquainted with the other aspects of filmmaking besides acting and you might find you like being a hyphenate. (like actor-director, etc. you know)
Understand Acting Better
The more you get into the process of making a film, the more clear your role as an actor becomes. You see that a director doesn't just want you to do what they want, but has the whole in mind. Your job as actor will no longer be the only element you consider, you might even have some empathy for the others you work with. It will become clear that you are an element of a whole, an important one, but no less than any other.
More Opportunity
Acting jobs, like any other film-related jobs, are scarce. If you show prowess in other areas of filmmaking, though, you will double your chances of finding work. If you can run the camera and act, then you can run camera while you're looking for other acting gigs. In fact running the camera will give you a better chance of making relationships that could blossom into acting opportunities.
Learn New Slang
If nothing else, you will learn a whole new set of words you can use to impress people. You'll learn about arcs, high-key lighting, premises, and apertures. You'll become familiar with wattage, slug lines, cookies, and dollies. You may be terrible at the other parts of filmmaking and not want to be involved with it after all, but you will now know what people mean when they use these words. All will not be lost.
You can't lose when you learn. That sounds cheesy, but I truly believe it. Rather than going to every audition no matter how ridiculous, put some time into hitting the books and then trying your hand at some of the other crafts in filmmaking. You might even make some friends. Why not.
