Actors Who Only Rehearse Acting Scenes Last Minute
Rehearsing is boring for lots of actors. They live for performing in front of people or a camera and can't seem to get themselves to do the homework. These actors often will only rehearse the bare minimum and this leaves them at a significant disadvantage.
Repetition Can't Be Rushed
Characters are very familiar with their world. If you are trying to be this character you need to be as familiar. Unfortunately, repetition is something that takes times. It cannot be done in a short amount of time no matter how hard you try. Your body gets used to conditions slowly and cannot be fooled. You can't convince yourself that you do something everyday by doing it all day for a single day. Your character uses a certain number of words throughout their life and you need to know those words for an extended period of time. Your character will have actions that he or she uses over and over in different contexts and for difference purposes, you need to know them and know them for a while not for a day or two.
Induces Nervousness
When you leave things to the last minute you will never be prepared and you will know it. You will be trying to pull one over on everybody and it will make you nervous. You'll be nervous about being found out and nervous about whether you'll be able to remember your lines or do actions like you planned to. So not only will there be seemingly higher stakes, you might even exhibit extra behavior. You may find yourself having trouble breathing, you may sweat a lot, or your hands may shake uncontrollably. When you leave things to the last minute your body takes over and you won't always know how to overcome your body's natural reactions.
Flustered, Impedes Quick Thinking
With none of your scene committed deeply in your mind out of the way of conscious thought, you will have too much on your mind to be able to do anything extemporaneously. If your scene partner were to mess up a line you would be thrown. If the audience made a distracting noise you might lose concentration. When you are keeping all of your scene in the front of your head there is no place for dealing with the unexpected. Also you won't have much of a capacity to improvise. You won't be in touch with your more subtle senses, and adrenaline will be pumping which will give you a tendency to do everything too fast.
Poor Habit To Feed
The first way we do things is often the way we do it the rest of our life. If you begin your acting career with poor habits you will likely take this with you forever. Each time you succumb to the temptation of putting things off and just doing them when you have to, you are strengthening the habit. It may seem hard to do something else but once you do it for a while the same inertia can work in your favor. Doing thorough preparation each and every time will make it easier to do the next time.
Shows You're Not Serious
There is so little that can be communicated to people to differentiate your acting prowess from another actor's that people take cues from everywhere. You never know who you will come in contact with and you want to put your best foot forward each and every time. In acting class you may be in there with a future producer that will write you off due to your poor work habits. When shooting a small student film where you have a small part your attitude may preclude you from being considered when a bigger movie comes along that you might be perfect for.
If you find rehearsing boring then take some steps to make it fun. Break it into chunks that you can do each day and reward yourself afterward. If you need peer pressure then ask somebody to do lines with you, most actors love to act and jump at the chance to do more of it. You can always find a way for you to do what it takes. There are certain things you can do to give your career a boost and this is one of them. Be thoroughly prepared. Do whatever it takes to cultivate the habit and it will reap benefits later on.
